Many native seed rates call for Pure Live Seed (PLS) due to the fact that these seed lots can vary greatly depending on species, thus requiring a standard that provides an accurate number of live seeds per acre.
Pure Live Seed (PLS) equates a standard of 100% live seed vs. Bulk seed. The germination and percent of purity equal how much live seed is in a quantity of bulk seed. Review the example below.
Example:
When comparing seeding that seeds at low rates, it is essential to deliver accurate live (viable) seed rates.
Assume that 50 lbs. of bulk seed, having a 80% germination, and a 88% purity will equal 70.4% of the bulk seed being LIVE SEED, or 35.2 lbs. PLS.
You will need 70.03 lbs. of bulk seed to have 50 lbs. of PLS.
